A&M-San Antonio alumni Christian Fox was featured recently in KSAT’s “Great Graduates” series, which shines a spotlight on college graduates with inspiring stories.

Fox, a history major who graduated in May with a 3.65 grade point average, earned spots on the dean’s and president’s lists during his time at the University.

Fox has overcome many hurdles to get to where he is today. He lives in a single-parent household with assistance from the Housing Choice Voucher program, which is offered through Opportunity Home San Antonio, a nonprofit that helps build and maintain affordable housing for qualified San Antonio residents.

For his academic success, Opportunity Home awarded Fox with scholarships for two years, which are intended to help students break generational poverty cycles and attain self-sufficiency through educational opportunities.

A San Antonio native, Fox said his mother, who raised two kids by herself, struggled financially, and the family moved around a lot, mostly on the city’s South Side. Fox’s fascination with history stems from his great-grandfather, he said, who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam and Korean Wars.

“He would take me to the Air Force base and show me all the model planes from different periods they have on display, which was pretty cool,” he said. “And from there I just got hooked on history.”

Now that he’s a graduate, Fox said he’s going to pursue a master’s degree at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

“After that, I want to either work at a museum or a national park, as long as its history related.”
