First Doctoral Program Opens Applications at A&M-San Antonio

Less than one year ago, Texas A&M University-San Antonio announced it would launch its first-ever doctoral program in fall 2026. The program, a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, will prepare graduates to address educational disparities and meet the unique needs of school districts across the region and state. Now, the program is officially accepting applications for enrollment. Applicants will be notified of their status in July and August, and courses start in August.

The new doctoral degree received final approval this summer from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the accrediting body of the University.

“We could not be more excited to have the final step complete and to begin accepting and reviewing applications. We have heard a lot of interest generated among local education leaders, alumni, and the community for this new doctoral program,” said Dr. Elisabeth Krimbill, associate professor in the Department of Educator and Leadership Preparation. “This new program will educate leaders across our region while remaining accommodating to the needs of working educators and district professionals.”

The Ed.D. is a fully online program, offering flexibility for working professionals, including flexible course rotation and summer coursework. Over the next few years, there will be specialized tracks in early childhood education, special education, and bilingual education that provide students with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. Graduates will be prepared for leadership roles such as principals, superintendents, and curriculum directors. Applicants must hold a master’s degree to be eligible.

The program has been in development since 2022 and was spearheaded by Krimbill. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the program in August 2023. According to a 2022 report from Hanover Research, data showed substantial demand for doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership. In addition, an Ed.D. will give graduates a competitive advantage in education leadership roles in San Antonio.

The program’s application deadline is July 15, and the application must be completed online.
