Inaugural Head Coach for Cross Country and Track and Field Announced

San Antonio, TX - Texas A&M University-San Antonio is proud to announce an exciting new addition to Jaguar Athletics. Blair Sohl has been named the inaugural head coach of men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, ushering in a new era of sports at the University.

Sohl arrives with an extensive and accomplished background in track and field, strength and conditioning, and higher education. With more than a decade of experience, he has built a reputation in San Antonio and beyond as a dynamic leader, elite recruiter, and dedicated mentor.

Sohl will officially join the A&M-San Antonio staff on April 6.

The University announced in February that it was adding men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women's cross country, beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. The teams will train and compete at the University’s new competition-quality track and field facility, opening this spring.

"I am excited and blessed to be selected as the inaugural head coach of men's and women's cross country and track and field at Texas A&M-San Antonio,” said Sohl. “I am thankful for the University’s search committee, athletic department, and leadership, especially President Salvador Hector Ochoa, for believing in me to lead this program. I will work tirelessly to positively impact the A&M-San Antonio community by fostering holistic development of student athletes who will make this University proud for years to come."

Sohl previously served as an assistant coach at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, where he held multiple roles within the track and field and cross country programs from 2011 to 2023. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the program’s rise from a small NCAA Division II roster to a nationally competitive NCAA Division I program. The Cardinals captured five conference team championships and achieved a historic “triple crown” during the 2022–23 season. Along the way, the program produced numerous standout athletes, including All-Americans, conference champions, and NCAA national qualifiers.

In addition to his coaching experience, Sohl brings a strong academic background. He served as an adjunct professor at UIW, teaching courses in sports management, and he taught kinesiology courses at San Antonio College.

Sohl is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds certification from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. His expertise in athletic performance has translated beyond the collegiate level as he has operated Alamo Athletics and Training LLC, where he has worked with clients ranging from youth athletes to professionals.

A San Antonio native, Sohl graduated from St. Anthony’s High School and attended Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, where he was on the football and track and field teams. He earned a bachelor’s degree in human performance and physical education from Adams State and a master’s degree in sport management from UIW.

“We are excited to welcome someone of Coach Sohl’s caliber to start our cross country and track and field programs,” said A&M-San Antonio Athletics Director Dr. Darnell Smith. “He comes in with instant recruiting and coaching credibility within San Antonio and beyond. Everyone we talked to has nothing but good things to say about the energy and passion Coach Sohl brings with him, and we know he is someone who can help us not only build champions on the course, track, and field but also in life.”

In addition to track and field and cross country, the University competes in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s golf, softball, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. Currently, A&M-San Antonio has over 130 student-athletes competing. That number is expected to grow to nearly 200 with the new sports.
