The University recognized three distinguished graduates at the 2026 Alumni Awards Ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 21. Held on campus during Homecoming Week, the annual event celebrates alumni whose professional success, service and leadership reflect the University’s mission and values. The three honors include the Distinguished Alumni Award, the Spirit of the Jaguar Award, and the Recent Graduate Award.
The 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Forest Cobb, Class of 2015. After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology, Cobb worked at the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute for nearly a decade, first as a research assistant and ultimately advancing to project coordinator. In 2023, he transitioned to serve as a natural infrastructure coordinator with Environmental Management & Restoration, part of the U.S. Department of War. His career reflects a continued commitment to environmental stewardship and public service.
Jorge Alvarez, Class of 2019, received the Spirit of the Jaguar Award. Alvarez earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and began his career as a fifth-grade dual language clinical teacher at Harlandale ISD. In 2021, he joined Southwest ISD, where he currently serves as a bilingual teacher. Since graduating, Alvarez has earned multiple teaching honors, demonstrating both professional excellence and a deep dedication to student success.
The Recent Graduate Award was presented to Benjamin Mendoza, Class of 2024. While a student, he founded the Jaguar Sports Network, a student-run organization dedicated to covering University athletics while providing hands-on training in multimedia sports journalism. Prior to completing his bachelor’s degree in communications, Mendoza served 10 years in the United States Navy. He also worked as a teacher’s aide at Comal ISD and as a news editor and talent reporter at KVDA Telemundo. In 2025, Mendoza accepted a position with the United Soccer League in Tampa, Florida, as streaming and video manager for its youth and pre-professional leagues, combining his passion for storytelling and sports media.
“The Alumni Awards are one of the most meaningful traditions we have at A&M–San Antonio,” said Mary Kay Cooper, director of alumni engagement. “Each year, we celebrate graduates who not only excel in their professions but also embody the spirit and values of our University. Their accomplishments inspire our current students and demonstrate the powerful, lasting impact of an A&M–San Antonio education.”
Launched in 2018, the Alumni Awards selection process begins with nominations from across the A&M–San Antonio community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Honorees are chosen for their professional achievements, service, and continued engagement with the University. As alumni continue to excel in a broad array of fields, the ceremony serves as an annual reminder of the University’s role in preparing leaders who make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
