Serving Those Who Served: A&M–San Antonio Recognized for Veteran Support in New Rankings

Texas A&M University-San Antonio has been recognized by the Military Times in its annual “Best for Vets: Colleges” rankings, highlighting institutions that excel in serving veteran students. The University landed at No. 15 in the Texas category and No. 24 in the Southwest category. The award-winning military news organization launched its Best for Vets: Colleges ranking in 2010. The annual report examines the services and information colleges offer veterans, and underscores A&M-San Antonio’s role as a leading institution for veterans seeking academic advancement, career development, and support services.

As a proudly military-embracing institution, approximately 16 percent of A&M-San Antonio’s students are military-connected, including six percent who are veterans or active service members.

“We are deeply honored to be named to the Military Times ‘Best for Vets’ list, recognizing our work in advancing veteran success in higher education,” said President Salvador Hector Ochoa. “This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to those who have served our country and to their families. At A&M–San Antonio, we take great pride in providing the resources, community, and support our military-connected students need to thrive in their academic and professional journeys.”

In addition to the recent Military Times ranking, the University has received many accolades for its support of military-connected students. This includes being named a Gold Recipient of the Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award (VEERA) four times. Gold status is reserved for institutions that provide the most comprehensive and far-reaching services for veterans and their families.

Patriots’ Casa, A&M–San Antonio’s dedicated center for military-affiliated services, provides academic advising, counseling, and career resources tailored to veterans and their families. The $12 million facility opened in 2014 and remains a cornerstone of the University’s veteran support infrastructure.

This year’s Best for Vets list includes 357 institutions, marking the largest field in the program’s history. Military Times collects data from an extensive survey of colleges across the country. Institutions are evaluated on academic quality, student support services, affordability, and outcomes for veterans, including graduation and retention rates.
