Men’s Golf Secures Program’s First Tournament Victory

Coming off a strong 2024–25 season, the Texas A&M University–San Antonio men’s golf team is off to a stellar start this year, capturing its first-ever tournament win at Wayland Baptist University’s Chicken Express Classic on Monday, Oct. 13, held in Plainview, Texas.

The Jaguars opened the tournament with a strong performance, shooting seven under par in the first round to finish in second place. Sophomore Kyle Mahan led the team with a three-under score. In the second round, the Jaguars surged ahead, shooting 13 under as a group—the best single-round score in Jaguar golf history. Senior Aden Morales led the charge with a six-under round (65 strokes), setting another program record.

Heading into the final round, the Jaguars were tied with the host team, Wayland Baptist, after completing the last hole. The Jaguars clinched the victory in a dramatic one-hole tiebreaker, earning the program’s first tournament title. Sophomore Loris Bonnetton Alban led the team in the final round, finishing four under par.

“What a historic run for the men’s golf team,” said Athletics Director Dr. Darnell Smith. “This marks the team’s first tournament win in the short history of the program, and I’m confident there will be many more victories in the years to come. I’d like to personally congratulate Head Coach Christi Cano and all the players for this amazing accomplishment.”

Launched in Spring 2021, the men’s golf program quickly established itself as a competitive force. Last season, the Jaguars finished fourth in the Red River Athletic Conference and advanced to the second round of the University of the Southwest Fall 2025 Invitational. Players David Rodriguez and Jacob Peña were named to the All-Conference team, while Peña was also named RRAC Golfer of the Year last year

The Jaguars will next compete in LSU–Alexandria’s Fall Invitational beginning October 27.
