Texas A&M University-San Antonio has earned a spot among the nation’s top colleges in Washington Monthly’s 2025 College Guide and Rankings.
The University secured an impressive No. 8 ranking in Best Bang for the Buck (South), which recognizes colleges where students of modest means gain the greatest return on their investment. This distinction is based on access, affordability, and student outcomes.
The University also placed No. 40 in the Master’s Universities category, which evaluates institutions that grant a substantial number of master’s degrees but few or no doctoral degrees. The University just announced plans for its first doctoral program, a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, set to begin in fall 2026. Institutions were evaluated on access, affordability, outcomes, and service.
Additionally, the University ranked in the top 200 national universities in Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars, a category that highlights institutions delivering strong value for both students and taxpayers. This complements the University’s own economic impact findings, showing a cumulative value of $427 million in increased earnings over students’ working lives from fiscal year 2022-2023 and $190.8 million in taxpayer returns.
Washington Monthly, an independent media organization founded in 1969 and based in Washington, D.C., launched its annual College Guide in 2005. The publication evaluates colleges based on their contributions to the public good, focusing on three areas: social mobility, research, and promotion of public service.
“These rankings are a powerful affirmation of our mission at Texas A&M University-San Antonio,” said President Salvador Hector Ochoa. “They demonstrate the value we provide to our students—many of whom are the first in their families to attend college—and to the broader community. We are proud to be recognized for our commitment to access, affordability and student success.”
