A&M–San Antonio celebrated the official grand opening of its newly renovated commuter lounge and refreshed bookstore today. Both spaces, while available to students in the spring, received a formal unveiling with giveaways, extended hours, and a showcase of resources designed to better support the University’s largely commuter student population.
For a campus where more than 90% of students commute, the commuter lounge represents a significant investment in student life and success, said Juan Guardia, vice president for Student Affairs.
“This space gives them a place to study, share a meal, connect with peers and feel like they belong,” said Guardia. “Instead of just coming to campus for class and leaving, they now have a welcoming environment where they can spend their day.”
The lounge, located on the first floor of the Central Academic Building (CAB), features comfortable seating, study areas, and kitchen amenities—including microwaves for students to warm up meals. Though designed with commuters in mind, the lounge is open to all students.
“We call it the commuter lounge because the majority of our students fall into that category,” Guardia said. “But any student is welcome. It’s about creating community and supporting engagement and retention.”
Across campus at the Senator Frank L. Madla Building, the grand opening of the bookstore also drew attention. Previously located at CAB, the bookstore’s revitalization was celebrated with giveaways, discounts on emblematic gear, and plans for deeper integration into campus life.
Kimberly Rottet, associate vice president for Student Affairs Campus Services, said the timing of the celebration reflects both the start of a new academic year and the bookstore’s evolving role.
“We didn’t want the moment to pass without acknowledging the updates and resources now available,” Rottet said. “It’s not just a place to buy textbooks anymore. The bookstore is becoming a hub for spirit gear, campus events, and partnerships with other services.”
The store recently expanded staffing to better serve students during peak times and is experimenting with extended evening hours, aligning with other student services on campus. Rottet said staff are eager to collaborate with athletics and student organizations, including possible pop-up sales at campus events such as rivalry games.
While some design elements, such as wall art and graphics, are still on the way, the bookstore already reflects the University’ commitment to enhancing campus life, with promotions throughout the semester.
“Together, the commuter lounge and the bookstore symbolize A&M–San Antonio’s focus on student engagement and belonging,” said Guardia. “Our goal is to meet students where they are. Whether that’s providing a comfortable place to recharge between classes or a bookstore that’s more connected to campus life, we want them to know they’re supported here.”
