Hustling across campus, first-year student Travis Garcia made his way to biology class—the official start of his academic journey at Texas A&M University–San Antonio. He was among thousands of Jaguars on campus today as the University kicked off the fall 2025 semester.
The courtyard, hallways and residence halls buzzed with excitement as new and returning students reconnected with friends and joined in Weeks of Welcome festivities. The back-to-school celebration, running August 25 through September 13, offers a packed schedule of activities, from the lively Penny Social on the Madla Lawn—with music, food, and games—to job fairs, blood drives, money-management workshops, and a Disglow Paint Rave.
First-year student Garcia was mostly focused on making it to class on time. A San Antonio native, he said his college choice was inspired after an A&M–San Antonio representative visited his West Side high school.
“It really caught my eye, and I immediately knew I wanted to go here,” said Garcia, a biology major who hopes to one day work with animals.
While Garcia hurried to class, dual-credit students Marina Cisneros and Victor Perez sat outside the Madla Building, watching the activity on the lawn. Both biology majors from STEM Early College High School, the pair are already thinking ahead. Perez, a sophomore, hopes to earn a doctorate in neuroscience, while Cisneros, a junior, plans to pursue a career in nursing.
“I’m just really excited to start the new school year,” Cisneros said.
She has plenty of reasons to be excited. As A&M–San Antonio continues to grow, the University has expanded academic programs and student resources. The recreation center, now home to men’s and women’s basketball, is thriving. Several new facilities are also in progress, including an upgraded softball field opening in September and a new eight-lane competition track and multipurpose athletic field scheduled to debut in early 2026.
“What a great time to be at A&M–San Antonio,” said Juan Guardia, vice president for student affairs. “As we welcome students back for the new academic year, I’m so proud of the energy on campus and the opportunities we’re creating for our Jaguars. This year promises to be one of growth, excitement, and student success.”
