Nearly 7,000 people gathered at Texas A&M University-San Antonio on May 4 for Festival de Cascarones, a fun-filled culmination of the Fiesta season. Guests at the free, family- and pet-friendly event enjoyed live music, games, carnival rides, and delicious food, from mini tacos to chicken-on-a-stick.
Jose Guerra, who lives in the neighboring Vida community, attended the event with several friends and family members. “I love that we can just walk here from home and enjoy the festival,” said Guerra, as several kids in his group rushed to pluck handfuls of colorful cascarones from a passing wagon. “The University is such a great resource for the community.”
As Guerra chatted with his friends, headline musical act Grupo Solido played the main stage. Earlier in the day, La Calma and Tejano Highway 281 also performed, helping keep the crowd excited and dancing.
Elsewhere, thousands of guests strolled around the festival grounds, checking out the local arts and craft vendors and indulging in delicious snacks. Outside Esperanza Hall, kids shouted excitedly as they twirled around on several carnival rides.
“This is the 13th annual Festival de Cascarones, and we are excited to once again bring the San Antonio community together on our campus for this long-standing, beloved tradition,” said President Salvador Hector Ochoa. “This is a special event for the South Side, and one that will continue to grow as the University grows."
