University’s Women’s Basketball Team Has History-Making Run

Womens's Basketball playerCapitalizing on the historic momentum established during its inaugural season opener win, the Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s women’s basketball team has made it to the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.

With a 14-10 record, the No. 4-seed A&M-San Antonio team will first face off against the No. 5-seed Huston-Tillotson in the tournament, which kicks off Friday, Feb. 28 at the Rapides Coliseum in Alexandria, La. The game will be live-streamed at 8:15 p.m. CST.

“To make the tournament in our first season as a team and as part of a new program is a huge accomplishment,” said women’s head basketball coach Chris Minner. “It took a lot of dedication, hard work, and talent to get this far, and I couldn’t be prouder of the team and how everyone came together to reach this historic milestone.”

A&M-San Antonio’s women’s and men’s basketball teams made their debut in October 2024 at the University’s new recreation center. Nearly 1,300 fans packed the center for the historic night, including such VIPs as Senator Pete Flores, Mayor Ron Nirenberg, former Mayor Henry Cisneros, Councilmembers Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia and Phyllis Viagran.

“I’d like to personally congratulate Coach Minner and our women’s basketball team for this remarkable accomplishment,” said A&M-San Antonio Athletic Director Darnell Smith. “We are on a mission to build champions! I’m truly excited about the future of the University's athletic programs as we continue to grow and thrive. We’re helping generate excitement and support both on campus and throughout the community.”
