Esports Showdown of System Campuses from Across the Lone Star State

A&M-San Antonio and Boeing Center to host largest system matchup

SAN ANTONIO, TEXASTexas A&M-San Antonio Esports is bringing together players from across the Texas A&M University System for the largest in-person matchup to date among the university teams. The competition will be hosted at the Boeing Center at Tech Port on Sat., Feb. 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“The Texas A&M System Showdown is more than just a competition—it marks the beginning of a new tradition and provides a stage for students to showcase their teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills,” said Aaron Jaggers, head esports coach at A&M-San Antonio. “As esports continues to grow across Texas, this event highlights its impact within the A&M System, not only through competition but also by featuring the talent behind the scenes—our student-led broadcast, content, and social media teams.”

The milestone event will be held in the Boeing Center’s state-of-the-art LAN center, Tech Port Gaming. Featuring top computer systems and connectivity, the students will be competing on the same platforms that have been used by other leading gamers. Also participating in rounds of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Valorant will be teams representing Texas A&M campuses in College StationCorpus ChristiTexarkana and Commerce.

Boeing Center at Tech PortA&M-San Antonio’s Department of Recreational Sports launched esports in 2020. Over the past five years, the campus gaming organization has grown, with dedicated staff and facilities that help promote gaming as a beneficial activity for students and the larger community.

The Boeing Center is the largest facility in the nation purpose-built to host esports events of all types. Among them, it has hosted the first-ever competition featuring esports teams representing all U.S. military branches as well as some of the world’s top professional players. The upcoming showdown among A&M teams marks one of the first major collegiate tournaments at the center, with more similar activations expected in the future.

There is also close and growing alignment between gaming platforms and operating systems that are used by advanced technologies growing on the Port San Antonio campus and elsewhere in the region, including robotics, aerospace and aviation, and space exploration.

This is why, in addition to serving as a home base for the Texas A&M-San Antonio Esports team to host larger events like the Feb. 22 showdown, the Boeing Center is also the main hub for R20—an competitive gaming league organized by the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology (SAMSAT). More than 400 area middle and high school students currently participate in the league, which will host its own year-end tournament at Boeing Center this spring.
