University Mourns the Loss of Beloved Victim Assistance Dog
Aug. 26, 2016- Jan. 24, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Oakley, the cherished victim assistance dog at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Oakley died Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Born on Aug. 26, 2016, Oakley provided comfort and support to crime victims and witnesses, leaving an indelible mark on the campus community.

Oakley’s primary role was to provide solace to those in need, helping to reduce stress and create a welcoming environment on campus. The therapeutic presence of a loving dog like Oakley has been well-documented, with crime victims often finding comfort in the company of such a caring companion.

Known for his friendly demeanor and gentle nature, Oakley loved attending events and strolling around campus visiting students, faculty and staff, spreading joy wherever he went. Oakley served as a remarkable liaison for the University Police Department, fostering positive connections and creating a warm atmosphere for all.

Oakley was raised by Officer Karen Tucker-Engel and her husband, Richard Tucker-Engel. Oakley enjoyed playing with his little sister Scout, running around his family’s property and, of course, enjoying his favorite pastimes—napping and eating.

“All I can say is Oakley was made for his job as A&M-SA victim assistance dog.  During his time here, Oakley filled hearts, lifted spirits, and brought smiles to everyone he met.  He always had a tail wag for his fans and would never pass up a belly rub.  He was the “bestest” boy and my partner.  He loved his Jaguar family and will be deeply missed,”Tucker-Engel.

Oakley underwent rigorous training to become a certified Canine Good Citizen (CGC) through the American Kennel Club (AKC) sponsored program. The CGC program emphasizes responsible pet ownership and good manners for dogs, and Oakley’s successful completion of the training showcased his commitment to both.

The loss of Oakley is deeply felt by the entire A&M-San Antonio community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Oakley’s family. His legacy of compassion and service will be remembered.
