It’s been a remarkable journey leading up to Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s 15th anniversary. That journey started some 25 years when Texas Sen. Frank L. Madla requested proposals to establish an institution of higher education in South San Antonio. Although met with some initial skepticism, others helped champion the idea, and in 2009 Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed legislature establishing the University as a stand-alone institution.
Since those humble beginnings, A&M-San Antonio has seen remarkable growth and today boasts nearly 7,700 students and 62 academic programs. The University is not only a critical educational resource, it also serves as a workforce development engine, preparing the next generation of leaders and helping strengthen the regional economy. And there are more exciting changes on the way, as the University continues to expand its footprint with new academic buildings and student resources. As we celebrate A&M-San Antonio’s 15th anniversary, below we highlight some of the milestones, people and events that have shaped the University and contributed to the vibrant community it is today.
With a student body that is about 77 percent Hispanic, A&M-San Antonio has a proud tradition of engaging with a population that has been long underserved in a part of the city that is often overlooked. Over the years campus leaders have forged partnerships, launched initiatives and implemented programs that have shaped the University into an inclusive educational hub that has helped thousands of students achieve their dreams.
Inspiring Excellence in Education:
From its designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution to being awarded the 2023 Gold Veteran Education Excellence Recognition, A&M-San Antonio has garnered many accolades, grants and accreditations. Such achievements illustrate the University’s dedication to academic excellence and its ongoing commitment to reflect the diverse communities it serves.
A&M-San Antonio remains steadfast in its dedication to providing quality education, fostering community partnerships, and creating an inclusive environment for students to thrive. As part of the University’s master plan, there are many new campus projects in the works, including a new recreation center and student housing scheduled to open this summer.
