Texas A&M University-San Antonio awarded a full tuition scholarship for four consecutive years of undergraduate studies to the first child born at the newly opened University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital. The scholarship, a symbol of the University’s commitment to education and community support, was presented to Parker Lee Speer, along with her proud parents, Jessica and David Speer. Speer was born on Dec. 5.
“This is a massive building and a massive project but the Speers family is the reason why this all happens,” said Dr. Jesse Pisors, vice president for university relations & advancement.
The scholarship award underscores the collaboration between A&M-San Antonio and University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital as both organizations strive to create a brighter future for the community.
“We were really just hoping to have a healthy baby, so this was a really big perk on top of all of this. This is really awesome,” said Jessica Speer.
“We are grateful, very grateful,” added David Speer.
Located on the University Health Main Campus, the University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility offering advanced maternal and pediatric care. It is the first hospital in South Texas exclusively focused on the needs of women and children.

The birth of the first baby at the new hospital is a culmination of months of hard work and planning that highlights University Health’s commitment to serve the unique needs of women and children in Bexar County and South Texas,” said Dr. Michael Gardner, vice president and administrator of University Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital.”
In December 2022 A&M-San Antonio announce a partnership with Texas A&M University Health Science Center (Texas A&M Health) and University Health. Aimed at establishing collaborations between University Health’s community hospitals and public health facilities, focusing on educational and research initiatives, along with the upcoming University Health public health facility and hospital development, which will be built at the west entry to A&M-SA’s campus, will improve accessibility to medical services and health education.
